Title: These Memories Won't Suffice
Summary: His I love you is quiet, a promise, a vow that she’ll carry with her, a keepsake of sorts, until he finds his way back to her again.

Author's Notes: 655 words. For [livejournal.com profile] lexiesloan. Set post series. All mistakes are mine. These characters, however, are not. Con-crit is both welcome and appreciated.

Luke’s fingers are callused as they brush at her cheeks, as they skim the gentle curve of her jaw. His smile is kind, tender, and does much to warm those parts of her that have long since grown cold, hallowed out by the wounds all those before him – her father, her mother, even Tim – have inflicted upon her. Becky starts to cry before she can stop herself, the tears welling in the corner of her eyes, slipping out and down her cheeks just as she preemptively tries to push them away.

“Come on now,” he drawls, and his palms are smooth and warm as they cup her face. “Don’t fuss,” He says and his voice is soft and caring. It harbors every single ounce of love she knows he has for her.

Becky closes her eyes against the sound – it just makes her cry harder.

“I’m just… I just…” She starts. Stops. Laughs around the sob curling in the back of her throat. “I’m just really going to miss you,” she sighs at last, laughing again at the same time.

This shouldn’t be so hard. After her father and mother and their revolving door of significant others, Becky has become an expert at goodbyes. She has the last look, last hug, last way she utters that very last goodbye down to an art. Usually it is only after when she falls apart. Usually she saves the tears until long after she has said goodbye. Now she is falling to pieces in front of Luke and all she can think about is how she used to be stronger than this. She used to be stronger before him, before he came into her life and broke down her carefully-constructed walls and changed just about everything about her.

Luke kisses her them. He kisses her like it is the first time, his lips soft and tentative, warm as they slide over hers again and again. He kisses her like he is still getting to know her, like he’s exploring uncharted territory every single time his lips brush against hers. Luke kisses Becky with his whole body – one hand twisted deep in her curls, the other tightly wrapped around her waist. He kisses her deep and hard, his tongue pressing over hers and smoothing against the roof of her mouth as his hands hold on like he never wants to let go. Becky imagines there is a significant truth to that.

“I’ll miss you too,” he tells her when he pulls back, his eyes slits as he peers down at her.

Off in the distance somebody calls his name and she knows their time has run out. She leans forward and kisses him against anyway.

When he pulls away again she watches as he slings his pack over his shoulder, secures his cap on his head. He looks all grown up when he’s in uniform, like a man he always was, but tried to so hard to forget sometimes. She reaches for his hand and squeezes tightly. She doesn’t let go.

“I love you,” she tells him and Luke just smiles because he’s known it all along. When she doubted, when she was still trying to figure everything out, he knew. “I love you,” she repeats more firmly, her voice solid, unwavering. “Don’t you ever forget that, Ok? Don’t ever forget how much I love you.”

Luke smile wavers, his shoulders sagging just slightly. He kisses her again because he can, because they still have one last moment together. It’s deep, desperate, branding. He kisses her like he is drawing every single thing she has to offer from her and making it his own.

His I love you is quiet, a promise, a vow that she’ll carry with her, a keepsake of sorts, until he finds his way back to her again.

Becky stands there long after the bus leaves, her fingers curling in the cotton of her dress.

Their last moment together was so gutwrenchingly, bittersweetly beautiful, I remember I clapped my hand over my mouth when watching. Love the way you write them, what a treat.

I love you and I loved this. THANK YOU for writing this! Their last scene together broke my heart because I see Luke as being an amazing soldier but at the same time... I just expected something else for him and Becky really is used to people saying goodbye to her and I HATED her in S4 but then in S5, she completely won me over and it was because of her relationship with Luke. You know me - I'm a hopeless fluffy romantic. I like to imagine they reunited again and were able to be happy. This was so sad and beautiful and it was everything I come to expect from your pieces. THANK YOU again! I loved this - saving it to my memories :)

I really wanted something else for him, too. Which is a weird thing for me to say because I trust this show 100% but at the time I was... not so sure. I was actually a little bit upset, to be honest. But now I get it? And I actually even like it a little bit. So, yeah.

Thanks for giving me a chance to write these two again. I really enjoyed it!
